The Royalty of the Cat World
If you’re lucky enough to share your home with a Persian cat, you already know they’re something special. With their elegant coats, soulful eyes, and unhurried charm, Persians have rightfully earned their place as one of the most iconic and beloved cat breeds around.

Why We Adore Persians
Persians are the ultimate lap companions. Quiet, sweet-natured, and endlessly affectionate, they bring a calming presence into any home. Whether you're living solo or have a bustling household with kids and other pets, Persians are typically adaptable, gentle, and thrive in calm, loving environments. They’re content to lounge beside you, soaking in the quiet moments—and yes, they’ll absolutely let you know (softly!) when they’d like your attention.

The Beauty Comes with a Little Maintenance
Let’s be real—those luscious, flowing coats don’t brush themselves. Persians require regular grooming to keep their fur soft, mat-free, and gorgeous. While they’re far from demanding, they do best in homes where someone is available to give them the affection (and upkeep) they deserve. And because of their flat-faced (brachycephalic) features, Persians may be more prone to respiratory issues or eye drainage—so a little extra TLC goes a long way.

From Ancient Persia to Your Couch
These regal cats have roots dating back hundreds of years to modern-day Iran. Their journey into Western homes began centuries ago, but their popularity has only grown since. Selective breeding has refined their signature long coats, rounded faces, and affectionate personalities, making them a favorite in show rings and living rooms alike.

Are Persians the Right Cat for You?
If you’re looking for a cat with a calm presence, affectionate nature, and a touch of glamour, the answer is yes. Persians aren’t the most athletic or talkative cats—but their love runs deep, and their companionship is steady and soothing.

Genetic Health Concerns in Persian Cats

Like many purebred cats, Persians are prone to certain genetic health conditions. Here's what to watch for and discuss with your vet:

  1. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)– A thickening of the heart muscle that can reduce heart function over time. Annual checkups with cardiac evaluations can help detect signs early.

  2. Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome– That flat face is cute—but it can come with breathing difficulties. Signs include snoring, noisy breathing, or overheating in warm weather.

  3. Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)– An inherited condition where cysts form in the kidneys, potentially leading to kidney failure. Genetic testing and regular monitoring can help manage risks.

  4. FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease)– Watch for changes in urination habits, straining, or blood in the urine.

  5. Dental Disease– Gingivitis and periodontal disease are common. Regular dental cleanings and at-home care are key.

  6. Eye Conditions– Their large, expressive eyes are prone to tearing and infections. Daily face cleaning can help.

  7. Lysosomal Storage Disease– A rare but fatal genetic disorder where waste builds up in cells. Breeding cats should be screened for this gene.

  8. Neonatal Isoerythrolysis (NI)– A blood type incompatibility between kitten and mother. Breeding programs should test for blood types to prevent fatal reactions.

  9. Hip Dysplasia– While more common in dogs, this joint issue can appear in Persians, potentially causing stiffness or pain.

  10. Portosystemic Shunt– A liver condition that may require surgery. Symptoms can include stunted growth or neurological signs.

  11. Mast Cell Tumors and Nasopharyngeal Polyps– Any unusual lumps, bumps, or breathing changes should be investigated by your vet.

Looking Out for Your Persian
With the right care, many of these conditions can be monitored or managed. Routine wellness visits, dental checks, and open conversations with your vet help ensure your Persian lives a long, comfortable, and love-filled life.
